Bert Helps HAWK Radio and Compass House

By Yasmine Dabash

For College Radio Day, October 6, 2017, Hilbert College’s Hawk Radio decided to celebrate in a unique way, by making its mascot a castaway.

Hawk Radio stranded Bert, Hilbert College’s mascot, on an island in the pond in front of Franciscan Hall for twenty-four hours. In order to help Bert, HAWK Radio teamed up with Compass House to collect 200 or more donations from Hilbert College faculty, staff, and students for homeless and mostly runaway youth.

The twenty-four-hour HAWK Radio broadcast and estrangement of Hilbert College’s mascot were wildly successful, generating more than 600 donations for Compass House.

If you did not get a chance to donate to Compass House, here are some things on Compass House’s Wishlist:

Personal Care Items: socks and underwear, lotion and sanitizer, soap and deodorant, toothpaste and toothbrushes, cosmetics, shampoo and conditioner, and lip balm

Food Items: nonperishables such as cereal, canned foods, and dry pasta
