Hilbert Helps Out

Hilbert kicked off Franciscan week with the annual Franciscan Day of Caring with students, faculty and staff participating in serving Hilbert’s community partners.

Franciscan Day of Caring allows the Hilbert community a significant chance to experience the value of service to others.

One of Hilbert’s community partners is Compeer, a non-profit organization, which is located in Buffalo, NY. At Compeer their mission is to promote good mental health through meaningful friendships. Their services include one-to-one and small group mentoring that is available to youth, adults, older adults and veterans. Compeer is always looking for office volunteers and volunteers that want to help with assisting individuals who are dealing with mental health.

Hilbert volunteers traveled to Compeer and assisted the organization with a few organizational and cleaning tasks. There were two tasks: one involved cleaning up the area around the building, the other involved stuffing envelopes with Compeer information to distribute to various nearby businesses.

Rijaa Khan, the Volunteer Engagement Coordinator at Compeer, talked about how much it meant to their organization to get volunteer help from the Hilbert community.

“It means a lot to us especially after the pandemic,” Khan said. “It’s really nice to see that youth are trying to get involved with Compeer because a lot of youth clients, especially post pandemic, are really looking for that kind of social support.”

She said that having students volunteer helps spread the word and gets others to want to volunteer. Compeer recently partnered with Hilbert College in bringing their organization to the campus. This will be campus based which will allow students to connect with people from the Hilbert community. The organization looks forward to accomplishing a bunch of things with this partnership, Khan said.

“First of all, just the fact that we can help students on that campus is just another avenue for us to provide our services to other groups that might not have received them otherwise,” she said. “Brand awareness and getting our name out there so that people can learn more about Compeer in general.”

The biggest help that Compeer needs is more volunteers. Khan mentions that there are over 200 clients that are on their wait list who are waiting to be matched with someone. After the pandemic, the number of volunteers took a big hit which put them in need for more volunteers. They are also looking for people who are willing to travel to the Buffalo area since majority of their clients are located there.

There were 11 students in the volunteer group, predominantly freshman but also some juniors. Ryan Fitch, a junior, was able to give some feedback on his experience with Compeer and the Day of Service.

Fitch said Compeer’s services are something that many people don’t use but should. He adds that this is something he would volunteer to do again.

“People underestimate how important mental health is and if I could give back to the community that helps people who have bad mental health issues then I’ll do it in any way I can”, Fitch said.

The Franciscan Day of Caring is a big event for the Hilbert community in which it helps people get involved.

“Coming from a Franciscan background in high school, I completely agree that there needs to be some type of day or activity such as this to help us give back to our community and help those that might be less fortunate than us,” said Fitch.

Compeer is just one of the many community partners that Hilbert is partnered with. If you or anyone you know are looking to volunteer, Compeer is the place to go. As mentioned, Hilbert and Compeer are partnering to bring their services to campus so stay tuned for that.

Hilbert Hawks Women’s Hockey Partners with Beauts

Hamburg, N.Y.- Hilbert Colleges new Women’s Ice Hockey team already has an exciting start with its new partnership with the Buffalo Beauts, Buffalos professional women’s hockey team.

This is a very exciting opportunity for the athletes on both the teams, and for the students of Hilbert, coach Cole Klubek said.

“This is for our entire campus community and not just the hockey program” he said. “The partnership is great for Hilbert as it provides our students with internship and volunteer opportunities within a professional sports organization.”

Opportunities like these can have great benefits for those in the Sports Industry Management program at Hilbert College. Having some of the Beauts around will have a great impact on the players of this new team and it will show throughout the season, Klubek added.

“It is a great reminder to our players that there are potential playing and operational opportunities in professional hockey after college which will be very motivational for some.”

Hawks Celebrate Season at First Homecoming Game

On a cold and windy Friday night in Hamburg, New York, the first homecoming football game in Hawk’s history took place at the Hawk’s Nest against a very talented D2 team, Lincoln University from Oakland, California.

The frigid weather didn’t stop Hawks fans from showing their support for their team. The environment was electric as fans showed their excitement throughout the duration of the game cheering loud and proud. “With this being their first season in history,” one fan said, “I would like to congratulate them on being their very best with the very best coaches we have around here.”

Head Coach Jim Kubiak said he loved seeing fans coming out to support the team. “ I think the atmosphere was very positive. Friday night game for our players, a lot of them from Western New York, very exciting.”

Unfortunately, the Hawks couldn’t get it done on their home turf losing 70-0 to the Oaklanders. “We had an opponent who was in from California; has played a bunch of Division 1 teams. We knew they were going to be big and physical, and they were big and physical.”

Although the score was not what the coaching staff wanted from their squad, there were some positive takeaways that came out of this game. In the first quarter, the Hawks showed signs of strength in the first drive on the defensive side of the ball, shutting down the Oaklanders forcing them to punt the football away. By the end of the first, the score was 14-0 in favor of Lincoln. Defensive linemen Taivaughn Roach and Clifford Zeigler both led Hilbert in tackles with 11 each.

By the end of the 1st quarter, everything started to go downhill. Lincoln scored 56 unanswered points in the last three quarters of the game. Despite losing by 70, Coach Kubiak was still positive and appreciative of his team for never giving up and playing their best until the clock hit zero. “ I thought our guys continued to fight, and they played as hard as they could, and when bad things happened, they kept on fighting, and that’s what we were asking them to do. I was very happy with them coming back in the second half and giving everything they had.”

As Hilbert’s season comes to an end with only three games remaining, the program has dealt with many ups and downs from the beginning of the season to present. “ We came out to put a new program together from ground zero,” Kubiak said, “And that means that we have all freshman and sophomore guys. I think overall I’ve been really pleased with the guys who have stuck with it and continue to grow in the weight room and the leadership from some of our defensive guys and we need to continue to get better.”

Leaving the stadium, a fan shared, “I think Hilbert’s off to a little bit of a rocky start but, hey, I think they’ll pull through in the end. I mean, it’s going to take a while. This is a brand-new team and they’ve got a lot of potential, so we’ll see where it goes.”

Hilbert travels to Wooster, Ohio to play The College of Wooster Scots Saturday, October 22nd at 1:00 pm, aiming for their first win of the 2022 season.

Hawks Football Wins Exhibition Game

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Hilbert Hawks football team traveled to SUNY-Brockport for a mid-season exhibition against the Golden Eagles JV team on Monday. The Hawks took care of business and headed back to Hamburg 14-7 victors!

How it Happened:

1st Half – Much like the matchup last week against Curry College, the Hawks and Golden Eagles played a first quarter game of field position with neither team scoring any points. Six seconds into the second quarter Brockport quarterback Evan Gordon connected with Mitchell Mackissock for a 22-yard touchdown pass. That would be the last time Brockport would score on their home turf for the day. It was also the only points of the first half.

2nd Half – With Nicholas Rinker at the helm, the new look Hawks offense started clicking right away after returning from the halftime break. Andre Augustiniak hauled in a 54-yard touchdown reception from Rinker early in the 3rd quarter and followed it up with a 1-yard rushing touchdown two minutes later. The Hawks defense, led by Ben Kirkland and Taivaughn Roach, had 69 tackles on the day including 6 tackles for a loss. The Hawks defense also had 4 interceptions including one late in the game that sealed the victory.

Final Score – Hilbert 14 – Brockport 7

What’s Next – Hilbert College hosts NCAA DII independent Lincoln University from Oakland, California, for their final home game of the season on October 14th at 7PM at Saint Francis High School in Hamburg, New York.

Women’s Soccer Bested by Soaring Eagles

ELMA, N.Y.  – The Hilbert Women’s Soccer team hosted  Elmira College this afternoon at the Sahlen’s Sports Park due to playing conditions back on campus.

The Hawks stayed with the Soaring Eagles the first 45-minutes but lost their momentum in the second half and fell in a 4-nill non-conference contest.

  • Location:  Flash Field  | Sahlen’s Sports Park
  • Records:   Hilbert 3-3-2  I  Elmira 4-5

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Due to the rain earlier in the week, Hilbert moved the game to a neutral site in order to get the non-conference contest in the books.
  • The light rain stopped by the time the women’s game started at 3:30 pm so the turf was wet but still fast.
  • Elmira took a one-goal lead in the 9th minute after carrying the ball down the left sideline and finished with a centering pass to the box that landed in the back of the net.
  • Macy Kisner had a terrific opportunity in the first half, sprinting with and then past an Elmira defender which left her alone in a 1 v  1 with the keeper who was credited with a save in the 24th minute.
  • The Soaring Eagles scored back-to-back goals from up top off hard shots that sailed over the Hilbert keeper, and they repeated that same feat six minutes later from the same spot on the turf for the win.

Q&A: Senior Soccer Player Gabriel Flewellyn

Gabriel Flewellyn, a senior athlete at Hilbert, has been playing sports for as long as he can remember, starting around age four.

His father, Steven Flewellyn, was his soccer team’s coach for a few years which ultimately helped him acquire passion for soccer. Throughout Flewellyn’s athletic career thus far he has played the following sports: soccer, basketball, baseball, tennis, swimming, hockey, track and field, cross country, football, and lacrosse. He currently is playing soccer and his position is outside back (defense). The Scribe recently got a chance to interview him about his athletic career while at Hilbert.

The Scribe: What got you into sports?

Gabriel Flewellyn: I’ve been doing sports as long as I can remember and I started really young. It was something I did with my father. He was my coach for a lot of it and my older brother and I got to play a lot together. It was almost family time and friend time because I got to spend time with my father, brother, and friends all at the same time.

TS: What sports you’ve played at Hilbert:

GF: I’ve played soccer my whole time at Hilbert and two seasons of lacrosse.

TS: Why did you commit to play soccer at Hilbert:

GF: I committed to Hilbert mainly for academics, but I was also recruited by the coach at the time and it was the sport I played the longest and I’ve enjoyed playing that the most of all sports so I had to stick with it.

TS: What made you decide to play lacrosse also?

GF: I met some guys from the team and started hanging out with them. I had no intention in playing until they kind of convinced me to play lacrosse. After they started having some captains practices, they gave a stick and some pads and I started practicing every night in the gym. Sometimes we’d blast music and the other guys would come and wed have a throw-around. They were like mentors to me and eventually I got to tryouts and made the team. I won’t be playing this year since I graduate in December and will no longer be here for the spring sports season.

TS: What was your biggest takeaways from being a Hilbert athlete:

GF: I guess just the importance of the biggest relationships you make. You can get some lifelong friendships and learn a lot from the other guys. You have a bunch of people from different places and mindsets and it’s nice to see them. You learn a lot about other people and how to relate and interact with them. That locker room mentality is a unique experience.

TS: How would you say the soccer team has progressed since your first year playing at Hilbert?

GF: Easily I think it’s the mindset. This year everyone’s goal is winning for each other. We all share the same mindset and you never feel like you’re out of a game. Our first game we were down like 3-0 and we came back and it was amazing. In another game everyone kind of thought we were out of the game, but we took them into overtime and came back and beat them. Everyone’s constantly working as hard as they can for one another, in practice, on the field. Someone might get injured or goes down on the field but they’ll fight through it. They’ll do what they can until they can’t do it anymore, it’s sweet.

TS: What’s this season looking like this year?

GF: The team is really recognizing its potential and really leading us to a great start and leading us to have a sense of optimism once conference games starts, positive momentum is a good way to put it.

TS: How have sports impacted your life?

GF: Sports have become a passion of mine, whether it been playing, working out to relive stress, or even just watching them with my father or friends. It’s really given me to something to be passionate about. It even gave me an outlet for having a new hobby of creating my own podcast. I love playing sports because they give me time to work out and have some social time. In my free time I just go to the gym, burn steam, and hit some weights when I’m stressed.

You can check out Flewellyn’s podcast on Apple Music or Spotify called Extra Points. It’s a football oriented podcast that covers NFL and college football.

Women’s Volleyball Loses Home Opener

HAMBURG, N.Y.  – The Hilbert Women’s Volleyball team was finally able to host their Home Opener tonight, and even the start of the match was a little delayed due to facility issues on the main court.

The Hawks, fueled by the large fan support, opened the series strong but suffered a 3-0 setback against Houghton University in the Hafner Recreation Center.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score:  Houghton  25, 25, 25   I   Hilbert  16, 11, 22
  • Location:  Hafner Recreation Center | Hilbert
  • Records:   Hilbert 3-10  I  Houghton 4-9

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Hilbert collected 21 kills, three service aces, five blocks, 19 digs as they earned 29 points in the three sets.
  • The Hawks earned nine kills in the third set as they attacked at the net looking to extend the match.
  • McKenna Rice led with six kills while sister Michaela Rice and Jenna Revak added five each.
  • Jaden Helbig was credited with 18 assists on Hilbert’s 21 team kills.
  • Katie Kociszewski worked hard on defense collecting three block assists and Michaela Rice and Maria Spinelli each added two assists.
  • Houghton took an early lead, but Hilbert consistently battled back, pulling within one point on several occasions.  The Highlanders, leading 16-11, made it a 21 12 game and were gifted the first set off multiple attack errors down the stretch by the Hawks.
  • Hilbert earned their first four points of the second set, two kills by Spinelli, one service ace by Revak and another kill by Emily Garnett.  The Hawks trailed 6-7 and let the set slip away a few points at a time.  Houghton with a four point lead, went on a 10-point run (six service aces) to build a 24-10 advantage and took the game 25-11.
  • The Hawks challenged Houghton in the third set sticking with them point-for-point. Knotted 11-all, Houghton used two consecutive kills creating separation they hadn’t had yet.  The Hawks, trailing 13-19, rallied back to make it a two-point game (18-20) and that was the closest they got before dropping the 25-22 match.
